All plastic, paper, glass and tin is recycled. Guests can also drop empty batteries in the glass jar in the foyer which will be disposed of in a responsible manner. Many used items are returned to the respective suppliers like ink cartridge, juice containers and egg cartons. As knowledge and staff participation are key in any recycling / waste reduction program, the team from Ocean View House also had an educational trip to Kraaifontein Recycling Centre.
To further reduce their waste, Ocean View House moved away from the 50ml guest amenities bottles; shower gel, shampoo and body lotion are now in 300ml refillable bottle dispensers in the guest bathrooms.
All organic waste goes into the 400l “Composter” and that produces compost for the herb and vegetable garden in just 8 weeks.
Ocean View House consciously sources and associate with suppliers and partners who act responsibly. They purchase local products as far as possible and only buy organic eggs and butter. Breakfasts include fresh herbs and vegetables from their garden.
They use environmentally friendly cleaning products and introduced an owl box in order to attract natural pest control to the garden.
Water consumption is monitored; to save this precious resource they have installed water restrictors in guest showers and the Guest House garden is predominantly indigenous with a lot of succulents.
Ocean View House has further lowered its footprint by using solar geysers, converting to LED lighting, energy efficient appliances and using timers on the fish pond and pool pump. Staff has been trained to switch off lights and appliances. All rooms have double glazed windows to insure proper insulation and climate control.
Ocean View House was one of the 19 founding members in the Pilot Project for Responsible Tourism sponsored by the City of Cape Town in September 2011. By signing the Responsible Tourism Charter they have declared their commitment to the active support of protecting and enhancing the natural, social and economic environments in which they operate.
