GREEN ACTS FOR SUSTAINABLE TOURISM IN SOUTH AFRICA
♡ Responsible Body Products
♡ Water Wise Practices
♡ Sustainable Energy Acumen
♡ Eco Architecture
It is with the utmost reverence to the environment that the owners, Sue & Albert Bröhm, have created this enchanting venue for you to enjoy the natural beauty and majesty of the area for which they act as custodians.
They actively reduce, reuse and recycle. Moon Shine on Whiskey Creek has many creative upcycled artifacts like lampshades, magazine racks, lights and Christmas stars – all of which were made out of everyday waste. All mosaic art work is also made out of tiles destined for landfills. When not turning waste into art they also recycle glass, plastic and paper; and all suitable food waste is fed to the chickens.
Moon Shine on Whiskey Creek believes in supporting local; as far as possible their fresh produce and even the glycerine and rooibos soaps for guest bathrooms are all sourced from responsible local farmers, manufacturers and suppliers.
Every drop of water at Moon Shine on Whiskey Creek has been harvested; there is nothing quite like the taste and softness of rainwater. They also have smart water saving practices in place. You won’t find any water guzzling baths at Moon Shine on Whiskey Creek, only gorgeous showers, all of which are fitted with low flow showerheads and their toilets have water saving cisterns. The garden only gets watered by grey water and rain. Environmental journalist Julienne Du Toit wrote a piece for Country Life about Sue and Albert’s water harvesting, click here to see an extract of this hosted on www.southafrica.net.
Sue and Albert are mindful of their energy consumption and keep it to the minimum. They have installed low energy lighting throughout and make use of intelligent design.
The cabins are designed to utilise natural lighting, air flow and insulation creating natural temperature control. As the owners have crafted the cabins themselves using sustainably grown pine they have been able to improve on the design over the years as their understanding of their natural environment has deepened, enabling to create ever more harmonious designs.
As custodians over breathtaking indigenous forests the owners take care to conserve their land and quickly eradicate any alien species that may take root. They also endeavor to educate guests on the area`s natural environment and the responsible way in which to interact with it.
Moon Shine on Whiskey Creek supports PAWS (Plett Animal Welfare Services) through donations to their charity shop to assist with their fund raising efforts to provide care for animals in impoverished communities in the Greater Plettenberg Bay area.
