Knysna is fast becoming the first nature-inspired town where biomimicry (an approach to innovation that seeks sustainable solutions to human challenges by emulating nature’s time-tested patterns and strategies) is used to solve economic, infrastructural and socio-political issues. At Hide-Away Guest House every effort is made to minimize water and energy consumption and maintain a low carbon footprint.
We separate and recycle paper, plastic, glass and tin. We compost our organic waste with our earthworm farm which nourishes our garden making it flourish.
We also donate old linen, appliances and other reusable items to the Knysna Recycling Swop Shop and Emzini Tours (a Knysna Township Tour operator with a passion for supporting their community through their soup kitchen and Lukhanyiso Safe House for abused woman and children).
We provide our guests with a range of body products that are environmentally friendly and cruelty free.
We predominantly use biodegradable and eco-friendly products for cleaning and general maintenance of the property.
We harvest and store rain water which is used to clean the verandahs, fill the swimming pool and water the garden; thereby greatly supplementing our water requirements. We also have water saving shower-heads and duel flush toilets to further conserve this precious resource.
In order to conserve energy we have installed solar geysers and attached timers to the geysers. All lighting has been upgraded to energy saving globes and numerous lights located around the property are motion activated. We have also installed cellulose fibre ceiling insulation throughout the house to keep the heat in during cool winter months and heat out during our warm summer; this has reduced the usage of heaters and air conditioners.
