Great care is taken by the owners and staff at Dover on Sea to protect and conserve the environment by operating in a responsible way. Aware of what they purchase and who they support, they have put practices in place to conserve resources. From everyday operations like ensuring that their firewood is from eradicated alien trees, to occasional chores like ensuring that their paints and varnishes are harmless; they make responsible choices so you can enjoy your stay with them knowing that you are supporting sustainable tourism.
All metal, glass, plastic and cardboard are sorted and recycled. Organic waste from the kitchen is turned into compost for the garden using Bokashi. They have also upcycled many of their exquisite furniture pieces.
Dover on Sea is mostly cleaned using Eco Kleen, a biodegradable, eco-friendly, non-toxic multipurpose cleaner.
All the guest bathrooms have complimentary toiletries from African Stillroom, these products are paraben and cruelty free.
The owners of Dover on Sea believe in supporting local and source their produce and services as close to home as possible. They support the local farmers markets and serve meals made from fresh, mostly organic and free range produce.
In order to conserve our precious water resources in the water scarce area of the Garden Route, Dover on Sea has installed 9 x 2500l water tanks to harvest and store rain water. To further minimise any water wastage they have installed flow restrictors on all shower-heads and have notices to guests encouraging them to reuse their towels.
Dover on Sea is very conscious of their energy consumption which they measure closely, in order to ensure that their consumption is minimised. Energy efficient appliances are found throughout the guesthouse, from the bar fridges and heaters in the rooms to the appliances in the kitchen and other facilities. LED lighting has been installed throughout which utilises far less energy than other lighting options. All geysers are turned down to 60°C and are wrapped.
Dover on Sea also believes in giving back, as such they support Ya-Bana Village, a project aimed at providing vulnerable and orphaned children with permanent housing in a family environment where trained house mothers offer love and structure. Time and donations are also offered in support of Masithandane, a Sedgefield based non-profit organisation that cares for the vulnerable and creates opportunity through literacy, skills development, art and tourism.
