All of the body products provided for guests in the suites are environmentally friendly and cruelty free.
Blackwaters River Lodge is in the process of implementing a new recycling program to dispose of waste responsibly. All organic waste is composted. Empty wine bottles are kept and reused as candle holders and vases to decorate the garden during weddings and events at Blackwaters River Lodge.
The owners of Blackwaters River Lodge are passionate about supporting local and select tradesman, service providers, farmers and other artisans from the area for all their everyday requirements. Delicious dairy products are purchased from Ganzvlei, a neighboring farm; cakes are from Wild Plum as well as many other items like wines of the region, wood (removed alien species), responsibly farmed meat, poultry and Fairtrade coffee. The on-site greenhouse produces fresh organic vegetables and salad ingredients for the restaurant. Guests can also indulge in the seasonal supply of organic oranges from their grove and are sure to enjoy their homemade marmalade.
The lodge harvests and stores rainwater in 2 x 100,000 liter tanks; this is the water supply to many of the suites; all other water requirements are sourced from the river. As such, great care is taken to ensure that this precious resource is not wasted. 60% of the toilets have already been upgraded to have duel flush systems and all showerheads have been fitted with flow restrictors. The predominantly indigenous garden and the golf course are watered at night to avoid evaporation.
In an effort to conserve electricity all lighting has been upgraded to LED and the suites are fitted with energy efficient wall heaters. As soon as a room becomes empty, the power guzzling geysers are turned off and only put back on in preparation for arriving guests.
The owners of Blackwaters River Lodge are very active and involved in their community. All excess food and surplus confectionery from events and the restaurant are delivered to Vermont Old Age Home and The Living Cornerstone Alzheimer’s home. Together with several other local businesses they participate in the annual Santa Shoe Box program to ensure underprivileged children in nearby impoverished communities receive Christmas presents. They sponsor disadvantaged matriculants dresses and paraphernalia for their matric farewell. Blackwaters hosts the Junior Golf Tournament as part of the annual Knysna Oyster Festival; the lodge sponsors the course and entry fees for Developmental golf players.
